Pizza takeaway in St Albans: from lockdown project to local favourite

Gracey's has always been a takeaway at heart. Long before the London kitchens and the newspaper lists, we were a pizza oven, a gazebo and a queue of neighbours in St Albans during lockdown.

The story: a lockdown project that got noticed

Like a lot of good things from 2020, Gracey's began as a lockdown project. Grace and James had fallen for New Haven pizza on trips to the US East Coast and started making it at home, then for friends, then for anyone who'd heard about it. Time Out later described Gracey's as a pizzeria that opened in lockdown and grew a cult following, and Harden's traces the same path, from lockdown project to pop-ups to a permanent home.

That home is 339 Watford Road in Chiswell Green, a disused shop next to the Post Office that we turned into a pizzeria in August 2021. In 2024, The Sunday Times reviewed us, and The Times named Gracey's one of the UK's 50 best pizza restaurants. Not bad for a takeaway that started under a gazebo.

Does New Haven pizza travel well?

Better than most. Neapolitan pizza is soft and wet in the middle, so it can go soggy in a box. Our New Haven-style pizza bakes for 4 to 6 minutes, which gives it a thin, crisp base that holds up on the drive home. Two tips:

  • Open the lid a crack on the way home so the steam doesn't soften the crust.

  • Reheat in a hot pan or oven, never the microwave. A dry frying pan with a lid on brings a slice back to life in a few minutes.

Our most popular takeaway pizzas

  • Smokey Ron: Smoked pepperoni, mozzarella, basil and aged parmesan. Also available with halal pepperoni.

  • New Haven 'Apizza': Long baked for those who like it extra crispy, with lots of char. Vegetarian.

  • Sweet Vera: House fennel sausage, sweet green peppers and shallots.

  • Plain Tom: Tomato, thinly sliced garlic, Sicilian oregano and basil. Vegan.

Add a dip or two: our Hot Honey and Garlic & Herb Ranch are made for crusts. See the full menu.
